![]() With so many varieties to choose from, it’s hard to go wrong when it comes to fall color. Green-leaved varieties like the weeping ‘Virdis’ erupt in a fireball of orange shades in the fall, while burgundy-leaved varieties like the weeper ‘Crimson Queen’ and the upright ‘Bloodgood’ provide deep, bright shade of red. A standout in this regard is the Japanese maple. ![]() Various trees and shrubs provide excellent color options as their foliage turns for the season. Japanese Maplesįall color is not just limited to flowers. Mums also make a great indoor plant and can be used in potted arrangements or as cut flowers. Full sun is best, but a half day’s sun will suffice. Mums will grow well in almost any soil although they prefer harsh, limy, well-drained soil. The flowers come in many colors and bloom from early September until late fall. Grown for their beautiful fall flowers for centuries, mums are a staple of the fall garden. ![]() The fall foliage also turns an attractive shade of yellow, which complements the purple of the berries very well. However, it’s the clusters of small berries that turn bright purple in the fall that make Beautyberry a necessity in any fall garden. This aptly named shrub blooms with pinkish-lavender flowers in the summer months. Plant in areas of full sun to part shade for best results. Asters bloom with loads of daisy-like flowers of white, pink, fuchsia, or lavender, so there’s bound to be a variety for every taste. Note that when grown in a container, it may not perform exactly as indicated on the tag - this is to be expected. It is even sizeable enough that it can be grown alone in a suitable container. It prefers to grow in average to moist conditions, and shouldn't be allowed to dry out. You may want to keep it away from hot, dry locations that receive direct afternoon sun or which get reflected sunlight, such as against the south side of a white wall. ![]() This tree does best in full sun to partial shade. It grows at a slow rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for 60 years or more. It has a high canopy with a typical clearance of 5 feet from the ground, and should not be planted underneath power lines. Glowing Embers Japanese Maple will grow to be about 30 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 20 feet. Glowing Embers Japanese Maple is recommended for the following landscape applications It has no significant negative characteristics. ![]() This is a relatively low maintenance tree, and should only be pruned in summer after the leaves have fully developed, as it may 'bleed' sap if pruned in late winter or early spring. Its average texture blends into the landscape, but can be balanced by one or two finer or coarser trees or shrubs for an effective composition. Glowing Embers Japanese Maple is a deciduous tree with a shapely oval form. The lobed palmate leaves are highly ornamental and turn outstanding shades of yellow, orange and burgundy in the fall. It has attractive green deciduous foliage. Glowing Embers Japanese Maple is primarily valued in the landscape for its decidedly oval form.
